Insecurity is an Invitation
I'm sure many of us have gone through moments of insecurity, some harder than others. For some individuals it might look like a lack of confidence when talking with people due to a breakup, or more commonly it might be a fear of speaking up in class because we are afraid of what others might think of us. It seems that the simple cure is to have confidence. However, I believe it's more than just that. It should be based upon your confidence and identity upon a higher being.
1) Insecurity Occurs When You Forget Your Identity
When looking into the Bible, there are many examples of insecurity. But Moses always occupies my mind when I look into this topic. Let's look at the burning bush incident.
11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” 12 He said, “But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.” Exodus 3:11-12
In this instance Moses was insecure. However, it makes sense because in Moses' mind he was coming with his own identity. I would be pretty insecure if I had to persuade a king to let go of his major work force. However, in verse twelve God reminds Moses that his identity is found in the Most High. Through taking the identity of God, confidence is found. This principle is seen throughout this conversation in which God is trying to communicate that Moses' identity and his strength is coming from Him!
2) Insecurity Is an Invitation to Find Your Identity.
The very instance when insecurity arises, realize that your identity is not where it is supposed to be. For example, if you are insecure because of the way you dress, than your identity is found in the brands you wear, or lets say say you are insecure about public speaking, than your identity is found upon other people and their perception of you. One thing is constant, and it is the fact that God is not your identity. So ask yourself, what do I find my identity in?
Now get this, If insecurity happens when you have forgotten your identity, then it is also an invitation to find your identity in the most High! We often try to put our insecurities in the back shelf of our mind, rather than to come to Jesus and ask Him to take our identity away and give us His! So there's really no reason to flee insecurity, instead flee to the one whose identity will never fail you.
3) Here is Your Identity
1) World's claim: You're worthless.
God's claim: You're worth it.
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 8:28
2) Your thoughts: I'm alone and have nobody.
God's thoughts towards you: Actually, I already promised you that I will never forsake you.
And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed. Deuteronomy 31:8
3) Devil's claim: You're filthy and nasty.
God's claim: I'll take your filthiness and nastiness away, and give you my righteousness.
“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet,
They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool. Isaiah 1:18
4) Your claim: There is no way I am capable of doing this.
God's claim: In your own power you're not, so take mine instead.
‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’ Jeremiah 33:3
The appeal is simple folks, in our own identity we are pretty weak and insecure. So write down those insecurities and doubts and claim God's identity and promises instead. Insecurity is an invitation to a higher identity.
