Life Lessons From Quantum Physics
This devotional was inspired by sir Isaac (John) Peacock :) Thank you for your devotionals which never fail to give Lance and I spiritual heartburn.
I can officially say that I am currently studying quantum physics. You know for a second it makes you feel smart, but then I get to the class and it seems like we're speaking a different language. I Come in for physics, yet I leave thinking that I was in Spanish class. If you told me that I would be righting a devotional based on physics, I would have thought you're crazy, but here it is folks.
A scientists by the name of Thomas Young had this brilliant idea to shoot a ray of particles through a slit and a double slit and see how they behave. Imagine shooting some marbles through a slit, you'll expect the line of marbles to be seen on the other side. Now imagine shooting them through two slits, then you'll see two lines on the other side. However then he got to the quantum level, and started looking at electrons, photons, and all that good stuff. Amazingly he started noticing different wave like patterns. When you shoot a stream of electrons through a single slit, it behaves like a particle and makes a line on the other side. However, if you shoot a stream through a double slit, there was an interference pattern and there were multiple lines on the other side, thus it behaved like a wave. So to make sure there observations were correct, they did another experiment in which they examined each electron individually, expecting it to maybe interfere with itself. However, when they observed it this time, it acted like a particle and made it to the other side without an interference pattern even though it was going through two slits. So when it comes to these quantum particles, they behave both like waves and particles. But what is confusing is the way you view it affects the results you see. If you look at it in a more general level, you'll see the interference pattern, however if you view it as individual electrons, or quantum particles, it doesn't leave off an interference pattern at all.
How in the World do I Apply That to My Life?
They way you decide to view things affects the results you are going to get. Now think about that in your everyday life. If you look at the day with positivity and trust in the Lord, you'll better be able to see the blessings. If you decide to look at the day as a gloomy day just because your toast came out burnt, well the rest of your day will most likely seem burnt as well (don't eat burnt toast, it's carcinogenic). If you look at an individual as salty, mean, and savage, that's going to come out though they might not really be doing anything offensive at all. If you look at an individual with positivity, kindness, and individuality in mind, it's easier to be able to work with other folks. This quote hits this concept of looking at things through the right pair of lens.
By looking at appearances and complaining when difficulties and pressure come, you give evidence of a sickly, enfeebled faith. Talk and act as if your faith was invincible. -Christ Object Lessons
If you talk faith, you get faith. If you talk discouragement, you get discouragement. Just as it is with light particles, what you see is dependent on how you're viewing the particles. Make sure to get the right pair of glasses, and view life the right way.
